GST formulas and examples
Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.
Add tax
Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)
Remove tax
Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)
Tax amount
Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100
Quick example
Starting from $100, a 5% rate gives $5 in tax and $105 total.
Starting from $105, the tax-free amount is $100 and the tax is $5.
Canada GST and HST depend on the place of supply
Canada uses the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and, in participating provinces, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). The federal GST rate has been 5% since 1 January 2008.
Current HST totals are 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia from 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. Zero-rated supplies, such as basic groceries, use 0% across Canada. Other provinces may impose a separate PST or QST.
Canadian dollar example and why the province matters
On CA$100 before tax, federal GST alone is CA$5 and the total is CA$105. The same taxable supply would total CA$113 at 13% HST, CA$114 at 14% HST or CA$115 at 15% HST.
This page's calculator is configured for the 5% federal GST only. It does not determine place of supply or automatically add HST, PST, QST, First Nations taxes, rebates or exemptions. Its result is orientative, not personalised tax advice.
