VAT formulas and examples

Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.

Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from K 100, a 16% rate gives K 16 in tax and K 116 total.

Starting from K 116, the tax-free amount is K 100 and the tax is K 16.

Zambia VAT: 16% standard rate, zero-rated supplies and exemptions

Zambia charges Value Added Tax (VAT) at a standard rate of 16%. The rate was reduced from 17.5% with effect from 1 April 2008. ZRA classifies supplies as standard-rated, zero-rated at 0%, or exempt.

Zero-rated and exempt supplies both show no output VAT to the customer, but they differ for input-tax recovery. Imports can also attract import VAT at 16%, 0% or exemption according to the domestic treatment.

Kwacha example and Zambia's withholding VAT mechanism

For a K1,000 standard-rated amount, VAT is K160 and the gross total is K1,160. A genuinely zero-rated K1,000 supply remains K1,000, but its legal classification must come from the Zero-Rating Order.

Zambia also operates Withholding VAT. ZRA states that the mechanism began on 1 January 2017 and appointed agents withhold VAT from payments to taxable suppliers. That collection mechanism does not change the 16% invoice calculation.

The calculator adds or removes only the selected rate. It does not classify supplies, calculate import value, process Withholding VAT certificates, determine input credits, or add customs and excise duties. Its result is orientative, not personalised tax advice.
